THE HEIRESS: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

new link in comments

Hello Friends: Today we have a real treat, courtesy of some generous online friends. I have obtained the kind permission of Southview212 to share with you the never-before-released original tracks from Copland's THE HEIRESS score. Please keep in mind that these are rough-sounding recordings taken from the original acetates. They were never intended for release and they are encoded @320kbps, MP3.

There are 14 untitled tracks, approximately 26 minutes of music. Aside from an eight-minute suite recorded by Leonard Slatkin and The St. Louis Symphony (available here on this blog), this is the only existing source (that I am aware of) of this score, which is truly in need of a complete restoration and recording.

Thanks also to my friend Jean for allowing me to utilize the "cover art" he designed for this THE HEIRESS. enjoy! Scoredaddy

For a well-researched article on this music, please read "You Have Cheated Me”: Aaron Copland’s Compromised Score to The Heiress which was published in Film Score Monthly May/June 2005. Written by James Lochner http://www.filmscoreclicktrack.com/2009/03/14/you-have-cheated-me/

Thanks for posting my article on the HEIRESS score, but I'd appreciate it if you could redirect your visitors over to my site to read the article.

First of all, I'll admit, it gives me some extra traffic. :) Second, I've been told that Google has been known to "punish" (for lack of a better word) people by removing them from Google results if their material is posted in more than one place online, especially an entire article. To them it looks like spamming.

Sorry to ask this publicly, but Blogger makes it so damn hard to email. And I can't be bothered with hooking up my Outlook. Feel free to delete the comment once you've read it. :)

Thanks, Jim

Jim, thank you for a fabulous article. I just recently found your blog and it is very well done, I must say. BTW, I can't believe you found this post so fast: It just went up today!

Thanks for your kind words, Scoredaddy. :) Glad you're enjoying the site. And thanks for promoting Copland's music.

BTW, there's a new re-recording of Copland's score for OF MICE AND MEN and OUR TOWN coming out on Naxos this fall. There's also talk of a complete HEIRESS recording as well. Keep your fingers crossed!

And how I found the post? I do a Google Alert for anything that has my site or my name on it. And look what a found! A cool new site! :)

Yes, I am well-aware of the new Copland recordings coming from Naxos. I am still waiting for Naxos to issue a CD of their newly recorded tracks from the THE CITY DVD...

I'd like those CITY tracks as well. But I'm not holding my breath on it. I can't remember if they did that with Thomson's PLOW THAT BROKE THE PLAINS. I can't imagine it was a huge seller. And if they DON'T release the CITY tracks, I figure it's a financial decision.

Naxos might as well exploit a recording which they've already paid for... anyway, I, for one, bought the Thomson CD, and a great one it is!

My god, I even enjoyed reading the discussion in comments. The Heiress being one of my favorite films, the post reached out and grabbed me. After the review, I read the article about the history of the score. First, I have to say that it is always heartbreaking to hear about those creative giants (and of course, everyone else) who lost their employment, their ability to share their gifts due to McCarthy & the right wing.
Even more difficult to understand is why a composer is hired only to have her/his work ripped apart without consent. I respect and love a lot of Wyler's work, but it is incomprehensible to me that he would do what he did.
All that being said, looking forward to revisitng the music and reliving the feelings associated with the Heiress.
Thank you for one of the best put together sites I've found. Being a lover of all types of music, I download from all types of music blogs and this deserves an award.

Jim Lochner wrote in 2009 that Southview212 gave him permission to share 14 previously unreleased tracks from "The Heiress".
Are they still available to hear?
If so, please instruct me as to how
to get "on the blog" to hear them.

@Rick - look at the first comment in this post. The link is still good.

Do you have plans to post Copland's "Our Town" & "Of Mice And Men" ? It was originally issued briefly as a download-only from Naxos. The physical CD release was cancelled because Naxos ran into some sort of "copyright" issue.

Scoredaddy said...

@jamesnobel - quite possibly. I've been waiting all this time for a genuine CD issue so I could post it lossless. Let me think about it...

Jim said...

FYI, while the CD is still in limbo (and may never be released at this stage), the download is once again available on Amazon and iTunes.

Scoredaddy said...

thanks, Jim. I hadn't noticed that it was available again. Wouldn't that indicate that the rights issue has been resolved and that a CD might be in the future? Would be great if they could do a 2CD set and place their digital recording of the music-only tracks from THE CITY.

Last time I heard from Mark Leneker, the producer of the recording (which was probably six months ago or so), there were no plans to release the CD. I don't know what all the details are. I wouldn't hold your breath for it. :)

Hi Scoredaddy,
do you know if there is a piano score for The Heiress suite?

Unknown said...

I hold the piano-conductor score for "The Heiress," which the late Ridge Walker at Paramount Pictures kindly prepared for me in 1978. However, it is not available for reproduction on account of copyright.

Mr Mark Leneker did not have permission from either the Copland Estate or the publishers of "Our Town" and "Of Mice and Men" to record the music for Naxos. I warned the management of Naxos about this beforehand, but they ignored my letter. So, there will never be a legitimate CD of the Naxos recording.

First and foremost, thank you for the work that has gone into this website. It has been an opportunity to explore aspects of Copland that are otherwise impossible to enjoy. I was looking forward to the Heiress, but the server says the file is not found. Has it been removed?
Keep up the good work!

Hello Scoredaddy, Is it possible to upload this score on MEGA or Zippyshare, it seems the one on Rapidshare is not available :(
Thank you for your help.

Regards.

Daniel.
